Cares Route from Poncebos to Caín + 4WD Route

Remoña desde la Horcada de Valcavao

You will drive your own car to Poncebos and start the hiking route around 10am or 10:30 (contact with us first so we can give you a little piece of advice).
At 15:00 hours we will pick you up in Caín at “Casa Cuevas” Restaurant (a good choice to enjoy traditional homemade food). Leaving Caín we will start the 4WD route visiting an ancient tramp for hunting wolfs called “el chorco de los lobos”. It was built before the 17th century and on use until late 20th. As we continue along the Valdeon Valley we will reach the Pandetrave mountain pass where we will enter on Remoña off-road trail, it will take us to the province of Cantabria. This route takes us to the base of “Fuente Dé” where the cable car is located. From there we go to the Village of Espinama, where we begin the ascent to the mountain pass of “Aliva”. This route is also known as “The reconquest way” because it’s said that the Christians used that route on the reconquest process on the 10th century. During our way up to the mountain pass we’ll be crossing Atlantic forests and we will discover the importance of grazing and the actual situation for farmers.
We will also be able to see animals like the “asturcón” and “Bretón” horses, or the “Xalda” sheep (autocton sheep of the area) and many cows. Once up in Aliva Mountain Pass, over 1500 meters high we will be able to see the “Alfonso’s XIII Chalet Real”. All this, on top of an incredible glacier landscape, left by the last glaciation, like the glacier front sediments that we will be crossing on our way down the hill. Going down, we will enter again in Asturias and Sotres (one of the higher villages in Asturias) is the first one we will see. In 2015 Sotres will be the end of stage on the cycling “Tour of Spain”. On our way down we will also visit the place where the shepherds started to do the famous Cabrales blue cheese.
Once in Sotres we will hit the road that will take us to Poncebos, the place where you left your car in the morning and we will finish the journey.
