4WD route around Picos de Europa National Park

This is the ideal option for those wishing to visit Picos de Europa National Park through off-road crossings, mountain trails and mountain passes.
Departing Cangas de Onís around 10am we will go along the “Beyos Gorge” upstream the Sella River. This way we will arrive into the Sajambre’s Valley where we will go throw a roman way and visit an old mill for grinding corn, built in 1873.

As we continue our way up to reach the “Pontón” mountain pass we go throw the second biggest beech forest in Europe and we will discover the source of the Sella River. We will also stop by the “Panderruedas” viewpoint and the wolf tramp called “el chorco de los lobos”.

Around 14 hours we will be arriving in Caín, where you will have some spare time to relax and have lunch.

On the evening we’ll be departing Caín at 15:15 hours and we will move around the “Valdeón” valley, located on the main center of the National Park. As we reach the “Pandetrave” mountain pass we will go off-road along the “Remoña” trail to fall into Fuente Dé. There, we will go off-road again going up to “Aliva” mountain pass, where a glacial mountain landscape will take us to Poncebos. From the village of Poncebos we will came back to Cangas de Onís.

Schedule:

10:00 am: Departure from Cangas de Onís (Ask for other options)
10:00-14:00h: 4WD route around the Vegabaño forest, Pontón and Panderruedas mountain passes and “chorco de los lobos” arriving to Caín.
14:00-15:15 hours: Meal time/ spare time (optional lunch in Caín).
15:15-19:30 hours: 4WD activity on the National Park
20:00h*: Returning from Poncebos to Cangas de Onís (20:00 in summer time)
*19:00h any other season than summer

The activity includes: 4WD transportation- guided route with cultural, environmental and ethnographic interpretation- insurance- binoculars and maps.

Required equipment:

Sport shoes/mountain boots, warm clothing, waterproof jacket, sun cream, sun glasses and drinking water.

Tips and advices:

Bring water and some food or snacks along the route in case you need to recover energy.
Don’t drink water from the river or the canal.
Make sure you bring with you warm clothes and confortable shoes.
Carry a cell phone with you.
Take care of the environment and show respect to the animals.
Never throw rocks into the river.
Kids must be accompanied by an adult.
The route is not recommended if you suffer vertigo.
Behave extremely cautious when taking pictures or approaching the side road.
