ROUTE OF THE CARES 4X4 ROUTE FROM CAIN TO PONCEBOS
Cares Route and 4×4 Off-Road Tour from Caín to Poncebos
If you want to start walking in the morning in Poncebos, you need to drive your car to the beginning of the route. We recommend arriving around 9:00 am to avoid parking problems. If you arrive later, especially during the summer months, there will likely be more cars and fewer parking spaces.
The walking route from Poncebos to Caín is 12 km long.
To join the 4×4 activity with us, you need to book through our website to guarantee your spots, as they are limited. Pick-up time in Caín is at 14:30 in winter and at 15:00 in summer. The meeting point is the restaurant La Casona de Palmira.
We recommend making reservations at the restaurant because there are not many places to eat in Caín.
Our 4×4 excursion lasts 4 hours and 15 minutes. We will visit sites of tourist interest in the National Park of Picos de Europa. The 4×4 will be driven by a local guide who knows the area. The guide will make stops and provide a lot of information about the area.
Schedule
- 09:00 h: You must leave your car before 9:00 am in Poncebos to start the hiking route.
- 09:00 am – 2:00 pm: Hiking route “Ruta del Cares” [hiking route without a guide].
- 1:45 pm: Arrival at Caín.
- 1:45 pm – 2:50 pm: Lunch NOT INCLUDED IN THE PRICE.
- 3:00 pm – 7:15 pm: Pick-up in our 4×4 vehicles for the route through the Pandetrave and Áliva areas. We will cross from south to north the Central Massif of Picos de Europa, passing behind the Cable Car of Fuente Dé but without stopping.
- 7:00 pm – 7:30 pm: Arrival at Poncebos to retrieve your car and finish the activity with us.
ROUTE OF CARES
Cares Route
The Cares Route is classified by the National Park of Picos de Europa as a low-difficulty hiking route. Starting from Poncebos, it only has a climb of just over 2 km and a descent of about 800 meters; the rest is flat. Its main difficulty lies in the rocky terrain. The Cares Route runs over rocky ground, making it challenging to walk on. Please ensure you have suitable footwear such as hiking boots.
What’s Included in the 4×4 Route to the Cares Route
- Transport in 4×4 to the beginning of the Cares Route in Caín.
- Guided route in the 4×4 with ethnographic, cultural, and landscape interpretation.
- Insurance.
- 1 Binocular FOR CAR, for use in the Jeep 4×4 (not included for the walking section).
Necessary Equipment
- Sport shoes such as hiking or trekking boots.
- Warm clothes.
- Raincoat.
- Sun protection.
- Sunglasses.
- Water.
Tips to Enjoy the Tour to the Cares Route
- Bring water and food to replenish your strength.
- Do not drink water from the canal or river.
- Wear warm clothes and mountain shoes.
- Carry a cell phone with a charged battery.
- Take care of the environment and respect the animals.
- Never throw stones into the river.
- Children must be accompanied by an adult and be at least 8 years old.
- Not advisable for people with vertigo.
- Use extreme caution when taking pictures and approaching the edges of the road.
Price
- 39€ per person.
During the winter and spring months, the itinerary of this route will vary due to snow. It will follow the same route from Cangas de Onís to Caín.
*The 4×4 are for shared use. The vehicle is not a full rental.
Pregnant women and children under 8 years old cannot do the 4×4 activity or the Cares route.
A minimum of 6 people is required for the activity (except in July and August).
Follow our schedule to start the Cares Route walking at 9:00 am. Parking in Poncebos is limited, and the passage of cars may be prohibited when the parking quota is full.
Also, remember to make reservations at the restaurant La Casona de Palmira for lunch.
